Walking with Philemon

September 4, 2022

The letter of Paul to Philemon is one of those very unique corners of the Bible that have left people wondering, "why is that in here?". It is unique among Paul's letters because it is addressed to an individual (well, three individuals that are probably of the same house) and it is about a very personal matter, as opposed to the letters to Timothy and Titus which are about pastoral matters.

Philemon is asked to reconcile with a former slave because of their mutual relationship in Christ Jesus. Paul's short letter is a master class of subtlety and grace. He appeals to how Philemon's role in the Church and asks him to see Onesimus as a brother in Christ.

Just like in his letter to the Ephesians, Paul directs Philemon to walk in love. Through this letter we can be mindful of our walk 1) from tedium to refreshment; 2) from slavery to freedom and 3) from estrangement to reconciliation.
